Here's a Throwback Thursday challenge for our Facebook fans. Can anyone help us identify the unusual bass helical instrument shown here? The image, dating from the second half of the 19th century, is said to be that of the Parisian instrument-maker Antoine Courtois. But what specific instrument is he holding? Has it survived to the present day? The image is part of the immense Leblanc photo archive acquired by the NMM in 2008. We're hoping someone has the key to unlock this mystery.
